BY VERONICA STIENBURG, ARCHIVIST
For the Archdiocesan 200th Anniversary celebration of the Founding Religious Orders at Providence Motherhouse on September 12th, RHSJ Archivist, Rodney Carter, and I thought a visual would be helpful to show at one glance where all three congregations had served in the Archdiocese. I immediately thought of the map of the Archdiocese and its parishes designed by former Motherhouse employee Gilbert Boudreau and gifted to the Sisters of Providence in 1985. We created stickers to mark the locations of convents and institutions on the map using yellow for the CNDs, red for the RHSJs and green for the SPs. The map was part of the historical display outside McKinley Hall for the event, and has now been rehung on the wall outside the SP Archives, and I’ve left the stickers on the map for those who want to see it in person.
The Congregation of Notre Dame (CND) had convents and residences in Brockville, Carleton Place, Kingston, Morrisburg, Trenton, Westport. The Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph (RHSJ) had convents and institutions in Amherstview, Kingston, Perth Road (Franklin Lake). The Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul (SP) had convents and institutions in Batawa, Belleville, Brockville, Chesterville, Gananoque, Kingston, Perth, Picton, Prescott, Smiths Falls, Trenton and Tweed.
