Thanksgiving Means

Visiting friends and family…
1905, October 26 – The holiday Thanksgiving brings many of the Sisters friends to the city. The house resembles a busy bee hive for a few hours in the afternoon.

A holiday…
1920, October 18 – Thanksgiving, holiday for teachers – Mother gives recreation in refectory all day.

Good food… 
1927, November 7 – Thanksgiving Day, fine but cold and damp from excessive rain. We have a fine chicken dinner. Recreation all day.

Sleeping in…
1930, November 10 – Thanksgiving Day – we sleep until 6 – have singing at Mass and recreation in refectory, supper at 5.30 p.m.

Doing chores…
1931, October 12 – Thanksgiving Day. The teachers are at home, they can help with the washing as the washing goes on as usual.

A visit to the cottage… 
1963, October 11 – The teaching sisters of Heathfield and the nearby missions are spending Thanksgiving week-end at the cottage. Mother Assistant accompanied them.

Entertainment…
1964, October 10 – One of our first treats for the Thanksgiving Weekend was an excellent movie, “Roman Holiday” starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.

Giving thanks…
1984, October 8 – To mark this Thanksgiving Day in a special way, a group of Sisters gathered in the community room to say morning prayer interspersed with reflections on all we have to be thankful for.

And decorating…
1987, October 12 – Sr. Rose Mary Ryan prepared a new banner for the front of the altar and it set off well the collection of produce assembled for this day of Thanksgiving. The usual dinner was topped off with delicious pumpkin pie.
