In 1966, Pope Paul VI requested that religious congregations in Canada assist with missionary work in Latin American countries. The Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul embarked on a fact finding mission and established contacts for ministries in Latin America. With the assistance of Bishop Alex Carter, the Chairman of the Latin American Commission and Father Birch in Ottawa, two sisters, Mother Mary Lenore Carter and Sister Marion Farnand (Mary Modesta) set out on a tour of the areas as suggested by Father Birch.
