Art Therapy

Sr. Kay Morrell, a professional Art Therapist, began sessions at Providence Motherhouse, 1200 Princess Street, Kingston, Ontario in May, 2005. The programs being offered were developed by Sister during ten years working in Toronto.

What is Art Therapy?

Through art making and relating to the therapist, with the art as an interface, people can develop healthier ways to manage life, gain insights into the root causes of unhappiness, and experiment with change.

Art Therapy is well recognized for its effectiveness in the following areas:

  • personal growth processing
  • stress management and release of tension
  • support, or relief, in illness of mind or body
  • refreshment and life enhancement
  • increasing creativity
  • addressing specific critical issues
  • communicating when words are difficult
  • recovery from addiction, trauma or loss.

The spontaneous open style of art psychotherapy is available, but Sr. Kay has also designed a series of unique Brief Art Therapy programs, Prayer-Art Retreats and Spiritual Journey programs. Sister is a Professional Art Therapist, a graduate of Toronto Art Therapy Institute and she will be your therapist at each session.

Who may apply?

These Art Therapy programs are available to persons 16 and over. You do not need a doctor’s referral. No previous experience or artistic skill is necessary. Easy to use materials will be supplied and are included in the cost. Because these are therapy programs, applicants must apply personally. Third party referrals cannot be accepted.

What is the cost?

Costs are given with the program descriptions that follow.

Is a subsidy possible?

To encourage personal commitment to the therapeutic process, there is no subsidy available for the shorter programs. Persons who have been in Ongoing Art Therapy for some time and have come upon unexpected financial difficulty, may be subsidized temporarily.

How do I get a copy of the schedule?

The schedule for each program is shown at the end of the program description. If you would like a copy of the brochure which also has the dates, please phone or e-mail and a copy will be promptly sent to you.

How do I Register?

To arrange for the program(s) of your choice, phone 613-544-4525 X 175, or e-mail to sr.kay.morrell@providence.ca, including your phone number. Sister Kay will contact you to complete the registration. The fee is payable at the first session, by cheque or cash.

If you need to cancel an appointment, kindly give 24 hours notice, or you may be billed for the session(s). There are no refunds, but credit will be allowed when circumstances justify.

What programs will be available?

All the programs developed in Toronto are available in Kingston and new ones are designed each year. There are three types:
